인간이 살고 있는 이 지구(Earth)를 포함한 8개의 행성(planets), 다수의 소행성(asteroid), 혜성(comet)은 태양(Sun)을 중심으로 공전(revolution)을 하고 이를 태양을 중심으로 한 천체계라고 해서 태양계(Solar System)라고 부른다.

행성을 태양에서 가까운 순서로 나열하면 수성(Mercury), 금성(Venus), 지구(Earth), 화성(Mars), 목성(Jupiter), 토성(Saturn), 천왕성(Uranus), 해왕성(Neptune) 순으로 나타난다. 이들 중 수성, 금성, 화성, 목성, 토성은 육안으로 발견된 행성이며 이들 외에 천왕성, 해왕성은 망원경에 의한 관측으로 발견된 행성이다.
원래 행성은 해왕성 뒤에 명왕성(Pluto)까지 포함해 9개였으나 2006년 8월 국제천문연맹(IAU)에서 ‘행성분류법’을 개정하면서 명왕성을 ‘왜소행성(dwarfplanet)’으로 규정했고 이에 따라 태양계는 8개의 행성으로 구성된 것으로 알려져 있다.
